    5th Grade Wrap-Up
I think that my biggest accomplishment of 5th Grade are my laurels. I had a lot of trouble with them, but I did them all, and I'm really proud of that (even though everyone did)! If I hadn't done a laurel the night before it was due, I did the whole thing in the morning. I think I was really determined to finish all of them, and I DID!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! Also, I was super committed to doing them. It was a lot of hard work, but I felt really satisfied with myself when I'd finished each one.
I'm looking forward to Science, the sports, and theater next year in the Middle School.
I plan to not leave all my homework for the last minute and to pay attention to directions for assignments and projects more next year in 6th Grade.

    March Update:
I think I'm doing pretty well with tests and stuff. I just rush through them, sometimes, and make stupid mistakes. Sometimes they're not stupid, though. Sometimes I just don't get it. That's usually with Social Studies, I think. I write long essays and I usually finish late, because I have a lot to say, and sometimes talk a little too much. For the rest of the year, I will try to focus more, not rush through things, read directions carefully, and try to finish essays faster.

    5th Grade Wrap-Up
Out of all of the books we've read this year, my favorite was The Green Book, Maniac Magee, and The Adventures of Ulysses. I liked all of these books for the same reason: They're all really...out there. Even though Maniac Magee is technically realistic fiction, Maniac himself is so unrealistic that the story seems like fantasy. I also liked Maniac Magee because it told you about important things like segregation and poor people, while still being fun at the same time. The Green Book was science-fiction. I really enjoyed the part about the aliens (moth people), and how they were so nice to the new people. I also liked The Green Book because the author made everything so real-sounding that I could picture what everything looked like in my head! I liked The Adventures of Ulysses because it was so mythology-ish and creative that it almost got overwhelming--I love that! Also, it had tragedy, romance, drama, comedy, happiness, everything! It was so exciting!
My least favorite book was Crow and Weasel. I, personally, like reading fast, so that I can see what the resolution to the plot is. Crow and Weasel made me go super slow. After about two hours of it, I'd read three pages. Also, I couldn't really follow it.
Here's how I see myself progressing:
I've gotten better at understanding what i'm reading (reading comprehension)
I've gotten better at inferring about books, but not as much as I'd like to have.
I've always been a pretty good writer, but I've gotten a lot briefer while I'm writing essays and my blogs. My essays have gotten a lot less list-y and a lot more informing-y. I have also gotten better at being brief on the blog. My creative writing has formed from writing about Zippo and Zap, the runaway twin ferrets (I wrote a book about them in 1st grade) to the sequel to Harry Potter: Albus Potter. My creative writing has gotten a lot more creative. I have always shared lots of ideas in class, but I never really planned out what I was going to say. Now, I'm able to organize my thoughts and then raise my hand!

I thought I did a pretty good job as the facilitator. I was prepared, and I didn't have any troubles with thinking up questions, and people gave great answers. It was really fun!

    This I Believe
This was our first not-completely-based-off-of-a-book project. We wrote an essay as a book character about something that we believed in, then made a recording of it and put that on a glog that we made based off of the essay. I did one as Maniac/Jeffery Magee, saying that I believed in being yourself. We did the same thing again, except this time it was something that we ourselves believed in, not a book character. I did acting. I think that my personal belief essay represents my best work because I think I really expressed what I felt when I acted and I explained myself fully. To make it even better, I could have tried to perfect those little awkward sentences that sounded kind of odd. I think that my book character essay was my least successful project because, unlike my personal essay, I didn't express or explain myself fully. It didn't really make sense. I could've gone more slowly, make it make more sense, and told more about my actual belief to make it better. My personal essay is where I see progress in my work. I had a lot of fun doing this project!

    5th Grade Wrap-Up
The civilization that I enjoyed studying the most this year was Ancient Greece. I already knew a bit about Ancient Greek Mythology and stuff, but I learned a lot more about the actual history. I was able to focus on the little details of the mythology, 'cause I knew all of the general stuff. I learned so much about the daily lifestyle and traditions of the Ancient Greeks that now many of the myths that I'd read previously made sense from the information we've gathered this year in 5E.
The thing that I found most interesting about history in general is that so many traditions and inventions have been passed down from civilization to civilization, and we have a lot from the ancient peoples today!
Here is how I'm doing with SS skills:
identifying key facts in reading-pretty good
    note taking-pretty good
    report writing-really good
    geography-not so good/ok
    connecting information-really good

    5th Grade Wrap-Up
When I get introduced to something new, I can get a bit confused, but I usually get the hang of it after the 1st or 2nd problem I do. I think that I've got pretty good at converting fractions to decimals to percents, and vice versa. I think that I've also got multiplying with decimals down pretty well. Except sometimes I get overconfident in myself, rush though those problems, and make silly mistakes...
Things I Can Do By Myself:
    Converting fractions and mixed numbers
    Adding fractions and mixed numbers
    Subtracting fractions and mixed numbers
    Finding area and volume
Things I Can Do At School:
    Positive and Negative numbers
    Pan balance problems

    Math Units 5&6

Our first long-term research project, that led to a 5 paragraph essay, was on basic things in Ancient Egyptian culture, such as a particular pharaoh or important person, religion, a specific god of goddess, mummification, and more. I chose to do the Afterlife, which is basically like the Ancient Egyptian version of heaven and/or hell. I think easiest part of the project for me was the cover on my essay. It was of the Weighing of the Heart Ceremony, with Anubis and Ammit the Devourer. I think that the creative project was most difficult for me, because I did an oral presentation as a random dead person, and I couldn't find my script, so I had to try to just say what I could remember from my studies and from half-memerizing my script. The next time we do a long-term project, I will try to focus more and go a little faster. I think that I need the most practice on note-taking, out of everything.

    3. I think that the most challenging laurel for me was my french laurel because I had trouble focusing during classtime, and I got nervous preforming it and forgot some of my lines.
    4. Here's a little about all of the laurels that we had to do:
City-state: We created a civilization, complete with a patron god or goddess, a description of the rules of our city-state, an advertising brochure, and a myth of the history.
Author study: We researched an author who's book we'd read in class and write an essay about them. Also, like the city-state project, we had to make a brochure that was basically the summarized version of the essay.
Let's Go Traveling: I made a book that had a summary or a civilization on each page. There were five or more facts on each civilization, and three pictures too.
Zine: We chose a topic and wrote a series of pieces of writing about it.
Math: We did 15/20 pages of a math packet.
