5th Grade Wrap-Up

When I get introduced to something new, I can get a bit confused, but I usually get the hang of it after the 1st or 2nd problem I do. I think that I've got pretty good at converting fractions to decimals to percents, and vice versa. I think that I've also got multiplying with decimals down pretty well. Except sometimes I get overconfident in myself, rush though those problems, and make silly mistakes...

Things I Can Do By Myself:
  • Converting fractions and mixed numbers
  • Adding fractions and mixed numbers
  • Subtracting fractions and mixed numbers
  • Finding area and volume

Things I Can Do At School:
  • Positive and Negative numbers
  • Pan balance problems

Math Units 5&6

Things I could teach someone else:

  • Find and identify equivalent fractions
  • Convert between fractions and mixed numbers
  • Order and compare fractions
  • Measure sections of a circle graph
  • Read stem-and-leaf plots
  • Make stem-and-leaf plots
  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators
  • Convert between fractions, decimals, and percents

Things I can do in class:

  • Make a circle graph from data
  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators
  • Simplify fractions (I do it well, but I rarely remember to simplify)
  • Find common denominators

I will try to focus on..........between now and spring:

  • focusing more
  • slowing down
  • not rushing
  • reading directions carefully

Math Units 3&4

Things I could teach someone else:

  • Measure angles within 2 degrees or exact value

Math Units 1&2

Things I could teach someone else:

  • Turn exponential notation into a regular multiplication problem and vice versa
  • Solve a problem with exponents
  • Find and identify prime and composite numbers
  • Know the basic multiplication facts with rapid recall
  • Use divisibility tests to find factors and divisors
  • Identify the place value of a number
  • Make a magnitude estimate
  • Find the landmarks in a data set: minimum, maximum, range, mode
  • Writing an open number sentence to represent a problem

Things I can do in class:

  • Read and write whole numbers through billions and decimals through thousandths
  • Factor numbers
  • Add and subtract whole numbers and decimals
  • Convert between inches, feet, and yards
  • Explain why it is useful to make an estimate

Other Thoughts:

-I need to work on reading directions slowly and carefully.
-Sometimes I work too fast, and make silly mistakes.
